Wike to Christian Leaders: “We Nearly Made a Grave Mistake in 2023”.
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has stated that Nigeria was virtually “dead” before President Bola Ahmed Tinubu took office in 2023.
Speaking at Saint James’ Anglican Church in Asokoro, Abuja, during a thanksgiving service for the commissioning of 16 projects in the FCT, Wike asserted that revitalising the country will require time, patience, and difficult decisions.
“The country was dead. It takes hard decisions to bring it back to life,” Wike declared. “We are aware that there are still challenges. But after just two years of a country that had been run down, do we expect a miracle? It’s not like a prayer where you say, ‘In the name of God, you are healed,’ and it happens instantly. It doesn’t work that way.”
A Warning on Sentiment and 2027 Choices.
Wike cautioned the Christian community about what he deemed a near miss during the 2023 elections, urging them to avoid decisions based on emotions rather than careful consideration.
“Let me speak directly to the Church. We nearly made the worst mistake in 2023. We have to be much more careful this time. That decision could have cost some of us our futures.”
He advised religious leaders to engage with politicians thoughtfully and avoid being influenced by propaganda or sentiment.
“Ask us questions; we are politicians. Be cautious about what we tell you. If you want the truth, call us. Don’t be swayed by sympathy for someone you don’t truly know. That’s how we almost made a mistake by believing Peter Obi could become president. President where?!”
On Democratic Integrity and Legacy.
The FCT Minister also criticised Obi’s track record as governor of Anambra State, particularly his alleged failure to conduct local government elections during his eight-year tenure.
“For eight years, he was governor and never conducted local elections. Yet, back then, nobody was angry. That was considered acceptable. Now you say democracy isn’t working, but you supported someone who ran everything alone?”
Wike concluded by urging Nigerians to evaluate politicians based on their past leadership and accomplishments, rather than empty promises.
“Anyone claiming they want to rescue Nigeria must be asked what they did when they had the opportunity. As governor of Rivers State, I have a track record. Now, as FCT Minister, I’m still delivering. That’s how leadership should be judged.”
