Kemi Badenoch, the UK Conservative Party leader, has responded to questions about her nationality and identity, explaining why she no longer identifies as Nigerian.

In a conversation on Gyles Brandreth’s Rosebud podcast, she mentioned that while she is Nigerian by ancestry, she doesn’t primarily identify that way.

In an interview with GB News, Kemi, who was born in the UK and spent part of her childhood in Nigeria, affirmed her Nigerian heritage but emphasized that she mainly sees herself as British.

She clarified her comments by saying, “My main identity is British. That is how I see myself.”

She added that Nigeria is a nationality rather than a single ethnicity, with many different ethnic groups and no single “Nigerian” language.

She also stressed the importance of integration, particularly for politicians, who she believes should focus fully on British issues when in the UK.
