Update:Police Interrogate House of Representatives Member in Connection with Bolt Driver Assault.

Alexander Ikwechegh, a member of the Abia State House of Representatives, is currently being questioned regarding his altercation with Stephen Abuatseya, a bolt driver, after being caught on camera assaulting him.

He arrived at the FCT police command at 2:50 p.m. and is still with the FCT police commissioner.

The FCT Police Command acknowledged its knowledge of the October 27, 2024, incident involving the lawmaker and the bolt driver in the Maitama district of Abuja in a statement titled “Nigeria Police Reacts to the Humiliation of Dispatch Rider by Abia State House of Reps Member,” which was signed by its spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh.

‘’Preliminary investigations indicate that Mr. Abuwatseya was delivering a package to Hon. Ikwegh when a dispute arose concerning the method of delivery. During this altercation, Mr. Abuwatseya was reportedly physically assaulted.

The FCT Police Command expresses grave concern over Hon. Ikwegh’s dismissive attitude toward the office of the Inspector General of Police following the incident. After allegedly slapping the victim, he reportedly remarked with contempt, “You can go ahead and call the Inspector General of Police,” demonstrating a troubling disregard for the authority of law enforcement.”

The command warned the public in the statement not to use the Inspector-General of Police’s name or position to intimidate anyone, highlighting the fact that such abuse of power goes against the impartiality that the position is known for.

‘’Currently, the suspect is at the Maitama Police Station undergoing questioning,” Adeh stated.
