Lagos Speaker Meranda Dismisses Resignation Rumors, Calls It Fake News
The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mojisola Meranda, has denied rumors claiming she has resigned from her position.
Her Chief Press Secretary, Segun Ajiboye, refuted the claims on Wednesday, stating that both he and the Speaker were in the office and dismissing the reports as baseless.
“This is the work of mischief-makers loyal to the impeached Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, who are spreading fake news on social media to mislead the public and put pressure on the current House leadership. We are aware of this tactic, and it will not succeed,” Ajiboye said.
He explained that the latest rumor originated from a “fake resignation letter” first circulated on Monday by “paid bloggers.”
“I urge the public to disregard these reports as they are entirely false and lack any credibility,” he added in a chat with PUNCH Online.
The clarification follows viral claims that Meranda had stepped down from her role. A document dated February 17, 2025, allegedly issued by Meranda, had been widely shared online, suggesting her resignation. However, checks revealed that the letter was unsigned.
The Lagos State House of Assembly has been embroiled in a leadership crisis since the impeachment of former Speaker Obasa by a majority of lawmakers.
Reacting to his removal, Obasa rejected the decision, insisting that due process was not followed and that he remains the legitimate Speaker.
Speaking to his supporters at his official residence in Ikeja, he claimed Meranda’s election was illegal and accused lawmakers of using a fake mace to swear her in. He also alleged that security forces were deployed to intimidate his loyalists on the day of his removal and that police officers prevented his family from leaving his residence.
Obasa vowed to challenge his impeachment in court and resume his position as Speaker.
Meanwhile, state lawmakers have urged Lagos residents to ignore Obasa’s statements, warning him against escalating political tensions.
