UBA Group Advocates for Peace in Africa with $500,000 Donation to AU

United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc, a leading financial institution across the continent, has reaffirmed its commitment to peace and stability in Africa with a generous $500,000 donation to the African Union (AU) Peace Fund. This initiative will bolster the AU’s ongoing efforts in areas such as conflict resolution, security, and sustainable development, all in alignment with the African Union’s vision outlined in the Africa Agenda 2063.
In a recent statement, UBA emphasized the importance of the AU Peace Fund, which plays a critical role in funding mediation processes, diplomatic efforts, and strengthening institutional capacities to effectively address emerging conflicts. UBA’s donation highlights its belief that economic development and regional stability are inherently intertwined, a sentiment that has long guided the bank’s mission in Africa.
H.E. Moussa Faki Mahamat, Chairman of the AU Peace Fund Executive Management Committee, recognized UBA’s contribution, stating:
“Peace is inherently tied to the availability of resources. For Africa to develop and prosper, peace must come first. Through this donation, UBA has shown its commitment to the continent’s growth and stability, ensuring that we are building a future together with sustainable resources.”
During the announcement of the donation in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, UBA Group Chairman, Mr. Tony Elumelu, explained why supporting the AU is critical. He stressed the importance of corporate involvement in shaping Africa’s future and the need for investment in peace to create an environment conducive to business, community growth, and national prosperity.
“At UBA, we believe that sustainable development and improving the lives of Africans are only possible through peace and security. The relationship between economic prosperity and peace is vital for driving growth across the continent,” Elumelu stated.
With operations in more than 20 countries, UBA remains deeply committed to Africa’s potential. Elumelu reinforced this by saying: “True development will only come through peace, and it is up to every individual, organization, and business to contribute to making that happen.”
Elumelu also praised the African Union for its ongoing dedication to peace and security and expressed UBA’s honor in partnering with the AU to further these goals. He hopes for even greater collaboration between both entities as they work together toward a prosperous future for the continent.
UBA’s commitment to Africa’s well-being extends beyond financial support. In a similar spirit, the UBA Foundation previously donated $14 million to help combat the effects of the global COVID-19 pandemic, further cementing the bank’s role in advancing Africa’s growth and stability.
