U.S. President Donald Trump has pledged to make Washington, DC “safer and more beautiful,” announcing plans to relocate homeless individuals and swiftly jail criminals.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated that the homeless would be moved “far from the Capitol” and warned, “There will be no ‘Mr. Nice Guy.’”
His comments come in the wake of the recent assault on Edward Coristine, a 19-year-old federal employee, who was attacked near DuPont Circle while intervening in a carjacking.
Two suspects have been arrested, and a $10,000 reward is being offered for information leading to additional arrests.
Previously, Trump announced plans to deploy federal law enforcement throughout DC.
The city, governed under the 1973 Home Rule Act, faces ongoing challenges with homelessness and crime, leading some Republicans to suggest federal intervention.
Mayor Muriel Bowser announced that DC is open to cooperation but denied there is a spike in crime, citing a 26% drop in violent crime and a 12% decrease in homicides.
