Trump claims he will be in favor of lowering family caregivers’ taxes.
Trump announced last night that he will support “a tax credit for family caregivers who take care of a parent or a loved one” as part of a new policy during his rally at Madison Square Garden in New York.
Trump stated that “it’s about time that they were recognized” and that “they add so much to our country and are never spoken of,” but no other information was given.
The concept is addressed under the name of “protecting care at home for the elderly” in the Republican Party’s official election policy program, which was made public in July. The party intends to “support unpaid family caregivers through tax credits and reduced red tape,” according to the statement.
In the US, tax credits—reductions in income tax—can take many various forms, and it’s unclear what Trump and his party are specifically aiming for.
The plan is a component of a larger package of tax cuts and reductions that his campaign has advocated, such as eliminating taxes on overtime, tips, and senior social security benefits.
The “sandwich generation”—adults who are raising children while taking care of aging parents—and the “care economy” have been the focus of Trump’s opponent Kamala Harris’s latest initiatives. One of these plans is to extend healthcare benefits to include at-home senior care.
