Traffic Eases on Abuja-Lokoja Highway as FRSC Opens Second Lane.

Traffic congestion on the Abuja-Lokoja highway has greately improved following the opening of a second lane by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, as of Tuesday morning in Koton-Karfe, vehicles were moving freely on both the Abuja-bound and Lokoja-bound lanes.

The Kogi State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Mr. Kumar Tsukwam, confirmed that the gridlock, which began on Sunday, had been resolved through decisive actions.

He explained that the FRSC held discussions with the Federal Ministry of Works and construction firms working along the highway to find urgent solutions.

“One of the agreed measures was for contractors to speed up construction and create alternative routes to reduce traffic,” Tsukwam stated. “Currently, congestion around Koton-Karfe has dropped significantly due to the joint efforts of FRSC teams from RS8.3 Kogi Sector, RS8.33 Koton-Karfe Unit Command, Corridor 3, and the military.”

He added that vehicles had been diverted to the under-construction Lokoja/Abuja lane to help ease traffic pressure.

The commander identified the main causes of the congestion as lane indiscipline, impatience, and reckless driving, especially by drivers of smaller vehicles.

To maintain smooth traffic flow, the FRSC has increased its presence in the Koton-Karfe area, deploying additional personnel and placing them on high alert.

Tsukwam urged motorists to remain calm and disciplined to prevent a repeat of the severe gridlock that left travelers stranded for hours.

Earlier, the FRSC had expressed concern over the lack of patience by motorists, which contributed to the massive traffic buildup, forcing many to spend 8 to 10 hours traveling between Abuja and Lokoja.
