The NAF starts an investigation after expressing “concern” over civilian deaths in the Zamfara airstrike
The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has expressed deep concern over reports that its recent airstrikes targeting terrorist hideouts, including locations linked to notorious bandit leader Bello Turji, may have resulted in civilian casualties in Zamfara State. Reports indicate that an airstrike on the Tungar Kara community in Gidan Goga district, Maradun Local Government Area, on Saturday evening inadvertently struck members of the Zamfara Community Protection Guard (ZCPG), local vigilantes, and residents, leading to at least 16 fatalities.
Confirming the incident, Maharazu Salisu Gado Faru, a lawmaker representing Maradun II Constituency in the Zamfara State House of Assembly, described the airstrike as accidental. He explained that it mistakenly targeted vigilantes mobilized to confront bandits in the area.
In response, NAF spokesperson Air Vice Marshal Edward Akinboyewa issued a statement on Sunday titled, “NAF Conducts Decisive Air Strikes in Zamfara, Investigating Vigilante Casualty Reports.” He reaffirmed that NAF operations are conducted with the utmost care for civilian lives and confirmed that an investigation is underway to verify the reports of civilian casualties.
“The recent airstrike at Tungar Kara in Zurmi Local Government Area of Zamfara State delivered a significant blow to bandits terrorizing the region,” Akinboyewa stated.
“While the operation successfully neutralized several bandits and resulted in the rescue of kidnapped victims, the NAF is gravely concerned about reports suggesting civilian casualties during the mission. As a responsible and professional force, we value the life of every Nigerian.”
He assured the public that a thorough investigation is ongoing, and the findings will be communicated transparently.
“Our primary mission in the Northwest remains to combat banditry and restore peace. However, the safety and well-being of all Nigerians remain a top priority. We are committed to working with relevant authorities to uncover the facts and take necessary measures to prevent and minimize civilian harm during operations,” the statement concluded.
