Taylor Swift Endorses Kamala Harris for President Following Debate
Following the presidential debate, prominent music industry figure Taylor Swift formally endorsed Kamala Harris for the office of president. Swift described Harris as a “steady-handed, gifted leader” in a late-Tuesday Instagram post. She also shared her opinion that the nation might accomplish much more under calm, as opposed to chaotic, leadership. In less than 30 minutes, the post—which including a link to a website where voters could register—had almost 2.3 million likes.
Swift’s support is significant because of her influence, especially with young women, who will play a critical role in the upcoming election in November. Tickets for her most recent tour were sold for more than $1 billion. Swift not only endorsed the post but also included a picture of herself with her cat, Benjamin Button, and signed it “Childless Cat Lady,” a reference to JD Vance’s earlier remarks against single women.
It is said that Harris’s campaign was not informed of the endorsement beforehand. In a live MSNBC appearance, Harris’ running partner, Tim Walz, seemed to learn about it and expressed gratitude for Swift’s “eloquent” support.
Swift clarified that she was responding, at least in part, to Donald Trump’s use of artificial intelligence (AI)-generated pictures that purportedly showed her support for him. She made it clear that she wanted to be open and honest about her voting decisions, thus she made her selection after doing extensive study.
In response to Swift’s endorsement, Trump said it was “just a matter of time” and denounced her as a “very liberal person” who often backs Democrats, raising the possibility that this would affect Swift’s marketability.
Swift has always been involved in politics; in 2020, she openly criticized Trump and backed Joe Biden. According to a recent Fox News poll, 68% of Democrats have a positive opinion of Swift, demonstrating her continued influence, particularly among Democrats.
Given her political clout and her standing as a top contender at the MTV Video Music Awards on Wednesday, Swift may have more chances to talk about her endorsement of Harris. Rearranging the awards show to coincide with Tuesday’s discussion was done so in keeping with MTV’s custom of encouraging people to cast ballots.
