Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri has dismissed widespread social media rumors accusing him of fathering the child of reality TV star Nengi Hampson. The unfounded claims, which even allege that the governor has four wives, recently gained traction online, suggesting that the 27-year-old former Big Brother Naija star is expecting his child—a claim made despite her appointment as Senior Special Assistant on Girl Child Development back in 2020.

On Tuesday, Governor Diri’s Chief Press Secretary, Samuel Oredipe, took to Facebook to denounce the allegations as “fake news” spread by “wicked people.” He emphasized that there is no personal relationship between Nengi and the governor beyond her official role and accused political adversaries of fabricating the story to sully the governor’s reputation as his administration celebrated its fifth anniversary. Oredipe remarked, “Political enemies of His Excellency Senator Douye Diri, Governor of Bayelsa State, are at work again. It is regrettable that purveyors of fake news are targeting the towering political profile of the governor. Nengi Rebecca Hampson has already come forward on social media to debunk these lies. This is merely a distraction, and it highlights why regulating social media is so important.”

In response to the rumors, Nengi herself addressed the issue on her X (formerly Twitter) account, unequivocally stating, “I’m not pregnant for any governor.” She added, “I’ve come to accept that we live in a world where lies spread quickly. I refuse to let this personal matter be distorted. While I continue to mind my own business and enjoy my pregnancy in peace, I wish everyone love and a happy Valentine’s weekend.”
