Protesters At Abuja Get Teargased By The Police

Nigerian police officers in Abuja have fired teargas at “Fearless In October” protesters who were protesting over the bad government in Abuja on October 1, 2024. The protesters had gathered at the Utako area in Abuja waving the Nigerian Green-White-Green flag and placards with various inscriptions such as “EndBadGovernance,” “DiasporaVoting,” and “EndHighLivingCosts,” amongst others, but were dispersed by policemen. The protesters ran helter-skelter for their lives after they were teargassed

The protest was a component of a larger movement that started on October 1 in Abuja and Lagos. It sought to draw attention to complaints about growing food prices, gasoline price increases, and the general effects of inflation on the daily lives of Nigerians in general.

The demonstration is timed to commemorate Nigeria’s 64th anniversary of independence and comes after a comparable demonstration in August that descended into violence in a few northern states.

The Take It Back Movement’s director of mobilization, Damilare Adenola, affirmed that the demonstrators would reorganize and carry on with their protest in spite of the police’s deployment of tear gas.
Protesters intend to keep drawing attention to the financial difficulties that many Nigerians are facing and exert pressure on the government to resolve governance-related problems that have lowered the standard of living for the populace.
