Our Forest Guards Are Effective in Combating Criminals ~ Mmeribe Leader NHFSS Abia State
The leader of the Nigerian Hunters and Forest Security Services (NHFSS) in Abia State, Sunday Chukwudiegwu Mmeribe, has reported that his team has successfully neutralized criminal elements within the forests surrounding Umuahia, the state capital.
Mmeribe outlined the method employed by his members during the operation, emphasizing their reliance on intelligence gathered from local farmers for the identification and apprehension of drug dealers and other illicit actors concealed within forested areas. He noted that these initiatives have significantly contributed to the marked improvement in security in Umuahia.
The NHFSS collaborates closely with traditional leadership and other security agencies, including the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA). Mmeribe stated, “Since 2016, our forest guards have been effective in detaining kidnappers, child trafficking syndicates, and various criminal factions, ensuring that the suspects are transferred to the relevant law enforcement authorities within a 24-hour framework.”
He specifically highlighted the substantial de-risking of the Ikpa forest, located between Ubaha and Umuezeoma in the Oriendu Ancient Kingdom of Umuahia North LGA. This area previously witnessed significant criminal activity, resulting in the harassment of local farmers—particularly women—who were deterred from accessing their agricultural lands due to safety concerns.
While commending Governor Alex Otti for his commitment to combating criminality in forest regions and other areas of Abia, Mmeribe has made an appeal for enhanced logistical support, including operational vehicles and additional resources, to bolster their enforcement capabilities, noting a current deficiency in support structures.
