Omololu Olunloyo Polytechnic Warns Students Against Planned Protest Over Name Change.

The management of Omololu Olunloyo Polytechnic, formerly known as The Polytechnic, Ibadan, has issued a strong warning to students against any planned protest scheduled for Tuesday (today). In a statement released on Monday by the Acting Registrar and Secretary to the Council, Joseph Ogunjimi, in Ibadan, parents and guardians were urged to caution their children and wards.

The warning comes after a previous protest last Tuesday, sparked by the recent renaming of the institution by Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, in honor of the late former governor Omololu Olunloyo, who passed away at 89. Students, displeased with the name change, disrupted academic and administrative activities and marched to the Governor’s Office in protest. They carried placards with messages like “Revert The Name Now,” “We Are Not Consulted,” and “Our Identity, Our Pride,” arguing that the renaming was done without proper consultation and disregarded the institution’s legacy.

In a new statement titled “Poly Management Cautions Students’ Union On Planned Protest, Advises Parents To Call Them To Order,” the management warned against any attempt to block the institution’s gates as a form of protest. According to the statement, the school has received credible information about plans by students to shut down access to the campus.

The management emphasized that any protest or disruptive action that goes against the interests of the institution or the government would not be tolerated and would be considered a direct challenge to authority. Security agencies, in coordination with the institution’s internal security, have been mobilized to ensure peace and order on campus.

Parents and guardians were once again urged to discourage their wards from engaging in any actions that could jeopardize the stability of the institution.
