Ogun to Form Partnership on Power and Irrigation to Boost Food Safely.
Along with other sustainable agricultural projects, the Ogun State Government has indicated interest in collaborating with the Ogun-Osun River Basin Development Authority on sustainable irrigation and power.
This was revealed in a statement released on Sunday by Dr. Angel Adelaja-Kuye, the Special Advisor to the Governor of Ogun State on Agriculture, who was paying a courtesy call to Dr. Adedeji Ashiru, the MD/CEO of O-ORBDA.
In keeping with the state government’s ISEYA Agenda, which Governor Dapo Abiodun is supporting, Adelaja-Kuye stated during the visit that the government wants to collaborate with O-ORBDA in order to accomplish the agency’s food production goals and objectives.
Numerous options are currently available from the Federal Government of Nigeria to improve food safety. Therefore, we also think that working with O-ORBDA might greatly increase our influence on food security.
She went on to say that the purpose of the tour was to explicitly talk about the Sustainable Power and Irrigation in Nigeria project’s prospects while utilising O-ORBDA’s extensive knowledge in this area.
Ashiru responded by welcoming Adelaja-Kuye and expressing gratitude to the state government for their interest in irrigation.
“At the moment, we have about 4,000 hectares of land available while the rest of the acquired land mass has already been encroached by communities.”
He clarified that the two components of SPIN are irrigation and hydro-power, adding that the Mokoloki farm project has been designated for the project.
Ashiru urged the state government to either key into the Mokoloki project or bring up new land for irrigation purposes, revealing that the latter option would involve a new study and design of an irrigation system and the construction of new facilities suggested by the design.
Water resources management, water security, and energy security issues in Nigeria will be addressed by the proposed Sustainable Power and Irrigation in Nigeria (SPIN) project, which will invest in irrigation, dams, storage infrastructure, and hydropower facilities.
The project intends to support sustainable development, effective use of water resources, and strengthened integrated water resources management practices by mobilising water for productive uses, making the most of already-existing storage facilities, and increasing hydropower producing capacity.
