NYSC Withdraws Corps Members from Benue Community After Deadly Attacks

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has pulled out corps members from Mbaa community in Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State following a series of attacks by suspected armed herders. The violence has claimed over 20 lives, including 16 farmers whose bodies were found in the Katsina-Ala River.

In a statement released on Thursday, February 20, Yahuza Adamu, the Assistant Director of Information and Public Relations for NYSC in Benue, confirmed that the withdrawal was a precautionary measure due to the ongoing security crisis. He assured parents and guardians that the safety of corps members remains a top priority and that NYSC is working closely with security agencies to ensure their protection.

“Since the beginning of incessant attacks on Mbaa Community, which shares a border with Cameroon, NYSC withdrew all Corps Members from the area and has not posted any there till date,” the statement read.

Adamu also stated that the NYSC Kwande Local Government Inspector had conducted a headcount of corps members in the region and confirmed that all were safe and accounted for. He clarified that corps members stationed in Jato Acka Turan, a location far from the affected community, were not under any immediate security threat.

“As a matter of policy, NYSC consistently takes proactive steps to mitigate risks and ensure Corps Members receive the necessary protection at all times,” he added.

The NYSC reiterated its commitment to the safety of corps members and urged parents and guardians to stay informed through official channels for accurate updates.
