Nigerians Lament as Mobile Operators Hike Data Tariffs

Nigerians have taken to X (formerly Twitter) to express frustration after waking up to higher mobile data tariffs imposed by telecom operators.
The sudden price hike has made several major telcos trend on the platform, with users complaining about the steep increase. A lot of users noted that a data plan of 15gb that previously cost N2,000 now cost N6,000 a whopping 200% jump.
Nigerians lamented that the cost of living is increasingly getting worse especially with the surge of data.
This development follows the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC)’s approval in January 2025 for operators to adjust tariffs. While telcos had pushed for over 100% increases, the NCC capped the hike at 50%.
However, the latest price adjustments suggest that some data plans may have exceeded the 50% cap, raising concerns about possible violations of regulatory limits.
