Nigerian Football Icon Christian Chukwu Buried in Enugu, Tributes Pour In.
Nigerian football icon and former Super Eagles captain and coach, Christian Chukwu, fondly known as “Chairman,” was laid to rest on Saturday in his hometown, Obe, Enugu State. Chukwu passed away on April 12 at the age of 74.
Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State noted that the burial concluded nearly 10 days of events in his honour, including tributes in Lagos and Enugu. He praised Chukwu’s humility, discipline, and patriotism, assuring the family that the state would preserve his legacy.
Anglican Bishop Samuel Ike described Chukwu as a courageous leader, devoted family man, and generous soul who made immense contributions to Nigerian and African football.
Chukwu led Nigeria to its first Africa Cup of Nations victory in 1980 and received national and continental honours, including the African Football Legend Award in 2012.
His son, Chukwuemeka Chukwu Jr, thanked attendees for their support. Dignitaries present included Peter Obi, NFF representatives, Senator Victor Umeh, former Rangers players, and other notable figures.
