NAFDAC Shuts Down Kano Warehouse, Seizes Massive Stockpile of Explosive Chemicals

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has reportedly closed down a warehouse in Kano after discovering a significant quantity of hazardous chemicals that could be used to manufacture explosives.

The warehouse, located in the Kwakwachi area of Fagge Local Government, was uncovered on Wednesday, July 23, following a tip-off and inspection by NAFDAC enforcement officers. Inside, officials found 60,000 litres of sulphuric acid, 28,560 litres of nitric acid, and 330 empty jerricans.

Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, the Director-General of NAFDAC, represented by Dr. Martins Iluyomade, called the find “mind-boggling,” stating it was one of the largest illegal chemical discoveries the agency has encountered. Adeyeye noted, “I have never seen such a large quantity of concentrated nitric and sulphuric acid stored together in one location before.”

She also revealed that the warehouse owner is not a registered chemical dealer and lacked the necessary permits from the National Security Adviser. Adeyeye explained, “The owner is not on our list of authorized chemical marketers. We maintain a database to track the import, use, and disposal of these chemicals, which are strictly controlled.

Handling or importing these substances requires clearance from the National Security Adviser, which the owner did not have.”

Highlighting the dangers, she added, “These acids are used in making explosives, and the quantity found here is enough to cause massive destruction in Kano if misused.” Investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend the warehouse owner, who remains at large. Adeyeye concluded, “We will make sure he is brought to justice and held accountable for how these chemicals were acquired and who they were intended for. This is a critical national security concern.”
