Macron: Peace Must Not Come at Ukraine’s Expense

President Emmanuel Macron, France’s President, has made it clear that peace shouldn’t mean Ukraine surrenders.

He made this clear while speaking in a joint press conference on Monday, February 24th, with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House.

Macron warned against a world where the law of the strongest wins. He emphasized the need to uphold international laws.

“This peace cannot mean the surrender of Ukraine. Ukraine fought over these past few years for its independence and for its sovereignty, but also for our collective security.

“I think that no one in this room wants to live in a world where it’s the law of the strongest and international borders can be violated from one day to the next,” Macron said.

His remarks came after the Trump administration opened dialogue with Russian President Vladimir Putin and pushed for a swift resolution to the war, which began three years ago when Russia invaded Ukraine.

In a significant departure from his predecessor Joe Biden’s approach, Trump is negotiating a deal that would grant the U.S. control over Ukraine’s vast mineral resources and rare earth gems before continuing to provide military support to the war-torn country.
