LAWMA Justifies ₦40,000 Salary for Street Sweepers, Says It Meets Minimum Wage Standards.

The Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has defended its decision to pay street sweepers a monthly salary of ₦40,000, asserting that the amount is in compliance with the minimum wage laws of the country.

In a statement released on Tuesday, LAWMA emphasized that the ₦40,000 salary aligns with the current legal framework for minimum wage standards, highlighting that it is not below the prescribed rate for workers in the state.

LAWMA also acknowledged the vital role of street sweepers in maintaining the cleanliness and orderliness of the state, adding that efforts are being made to improve their welfare and working conditions. The authority reassured the public that measures would be taken to ensure the well-being of the workers, who are often involved in strenuous and challenging tasks.

However, the salary has come under scrutiny from various quarters. Critics have argued that the amount is insufficient, given the hard work and long hours required of the street sweepers. Some have raised concerns about the adequacy of the payment, especially considering the rising cost of living in Lagos.

Despite the criticism, LAWMA maintained that the salary is in line with government regulations and is reflective of the minimum wage standard in the state.

The authority further stated that it remains committed to continuously reviewing the welfare of its employees to ensure that they are fairly compensated for their services.
