Lagos State Increases Minimum Wage to N85,000, Says Governor Sanwo-Olu

The Lagos State governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has declared that the minimum salary for state employees will henceforth be N85,000.

On Wednesday, October 16, the governor made this declaration in an interview that aired on Channels Television.

“I’m glad to let you know that the minimum wage for Lagos, which we have discussed with our union, is N85,000 today,” Sanwo-Olu stated.
The governor made it clear that the choice was made with the state’s finances and the high expense of living in Lagos in mind, not to compete with other states.“It is not a competition.

I am not going to say that we are paying more than some people, it is a function of affordability and capacity,” Sanwo-Olu added.

The speaker expressed recognition of the distinct financial challenges encountered by Lagos residents, saying, “We are all too aware that living in Lagos entails a higher cost of living.

“We are completely conscious. Sanwo-Olu added that the state’s government servants had already received pay raises earlier in the year.

He said he hoped in the near future to boost the minimum salary even higher to N100,000.

“I will want to come back in January and say that I have been able to increase the minimum wage of Lagos to N100,000, not because I want to make anybody look bad, but because I want my people to have a living wage,” he said.
