Lagos Government Shuts Down Purple Lekki Mall after 28-year-old Man died in parking lot.

The popular Purple Mall in Lagos has been shut down indefinitely by the state government following a tragic incident that occurred on Thursday, June 26. The closure was announced by the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources on Wednesday, July 2, pending a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

According to Kylie, the grieving mother of the deceased, her only child, Obinna, was a regular at the mall’s gym. On the day of the incident, Obinna was directed to park on the fifth floor of the mall’s multi-level parking structure. Kylie revealed that CCTV footage shows her son’s car “tipped over” while he was slowly driving around in search of a parking space.

“There were no signs or instructions indicating which way was the entrance or the exit,” she said. “My son mistakenly entered through the exit. It’s a multi-level car park, and obviously, when you are driving inside one, you don’t speed—you’re looking for a parking spot. He wasn’t speeding.”

She further stated that the CCTV footage cut off right after the moment his car tipped over, leaving the family with unanswered questions.

The distraught mother also criticized the response time of the mall staff, stating that it took 35 minutes before  Obinna was removed from the vehicle and rush him to the hospital, where he was later pronounced d@ad.

Mall officials, however, claimed that a valet had offered to help Obinna park, but he allegedly declined. This claim was refuted by Obinna’s mother, who said her son’s friend—who was driving behind him—confirmed that mall staff had asked them to park their vehicles themselves.

In response to the incident, Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, issued a statement announcing the mall’s closure and the formation of a special investigation team. The team will assess the cause of the parking lot failure, inspect compliance with safety regulations, and identify any structural or environmental violations.

“This heartbreaking accident was entirely preventable,” Wahab stated. “We will ensure full accountability and implement all necessary measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.”

He also extended his condolences to the  family, emphasizing that “Lagosians deserve safe public spaces, and we will not compromise on this.”

The state government assured the public that updates will be provided as the investigation continues.
