Kaduna State University ASUU Begins Indefinite Strike Over Unmet Demands.

Due to unresolved welfare concerns, the Academic Staff Union of the University, Kaduna State University Branch, has announced an indefinite strike that would start on February 18.

In a statement signed by its Secretary, Dr. Peter Waziri, and Chairman, Dr. Peter Adamu, the union made the announcement.

The News Agency of Nigeria in Kaduna was given access to it on Tuesday.

According to the statement, the union’s National Executive Council gave its permission before the action was taken.

“With effect from today, February 18, 2025, the Academic Staff Union of Universities, KASU branch would like to inform the public that its National Executive Council has granted the branch’s congress’s proposal to go on a complete, thorough, and indefinite strike.

“Congress unanimously and vehemently rejected the promises from the government of Kaduna State for lack of substance, specific details, and actionable timelines on the payment of the outstanding entitlements to members,” the statement said.

One of the ongoing welfare issues, according to the union, is the failure to pay all withheld salary, including 60% in September 2017 and May through September 2022.

It also mentioned the payment of promotion arrears, the supervision allowances for students participating in the Industrial Work Experience Scheme, and the nonpayment of Earned Academic Allowances from 2016 to the present.

The implementation of the 25 percent and 35 percent pay award, the non-remittance of pensions from 2009 to 2019, and Group Life Assurance and other benefits to deceased members were also unresolved.

The union claims that the return of the university’s autonomy is another ambiguity.
