A mother hippopotamus nursing her young murdered Malam Usman Maigadi, a guard at an orchard owned by Dr. Muhammad Zayyanu-Abdullahi, the Emir of Yauri in Kebbi State.

On Sunday, September 22, 2024, 60-year-old Maigadi was allegedly attacked by a hippopotamus while she was fishing in the Yauri River in Tillo Village in Yauri LGA. There were rumors that the animal believed Maigadi was about to harm its young, so it attacked in self-defense.

The Kebbi State Government and Yauri Local Local Government Chairman, Alhaji Abubakar Shu’aibu, verified the incident.

Shu’aibu said that Mahgadi had been buried in Yauri in accordance with Islamic customs following a funeral prayer.

Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris conveyed his sympathies to the Yauri Emirate and the dead family in a statement issued through his Chief Press Secretary, Alhaji Ahmed Idris.

The governor prayed to Allah to forgive the dead man’s sins and grant him Jannatul Firdaus.
