Gaza Ceasefire Talks in Final Stage, Palestinian Negotiator says
Following several months of inactivity, there are new indications that Israel and Hamas may be getting closer to reaching an agreement about the release of hostages and a ceasefire in Gaza.
The Palestinian government is currently in a “decisive and final phase” of negotiations, according to a senior Palestinian official who is participating in the indirect negotiations.
In addition, Israel Katz, the Minister of Defense of Israel, has stated that a deal is more likely than ever before.
In recent weeks, the United States of America, Qatar, and Egypt have restarted their efforts to mediate, and they have reported that both sides in this battle that has been going on for fourteen months are more willing to reach an agreement.
An Israeli delegation that has been described as “working level” is currently in Doha, the capital of Qatar, in the midst of a frenzy of diplomatic comings and goings in the region with this delegation.
In the first forty-five days, the Palestinian official described a three-phase plan that would result in the release of civilians and female soldiers who were being kept as hostages in Gaza. Additionally, Israeli forces would withdraw from city centers, the coastal route, and the crucial strip of land along the border with Egypt.
It was said by the official that there would be a system in place that would allow Gazans who had been displaced to return to the northern part of the region.
The remaining hostages would be released during the second stage, and forces would be evacuated before the third stage, which would bring an end to the war.
There are 96 captives that are still being kept in Gaza, and Israel believes that 62 of them are still alive.
The plan seems to be based on the agreement that was presented by Vice President Joe Biden of the United States on May 31. Reports from all parties emphasize that there are important specifics that need to be worked out.
Midway through the month of October, a round of negotiations was unsuccessful in producing a compromise, as Hamas rejected a plan for a short-term truce.
“We have not been this close to an agreement on the hostages since the previous deal,” Katz reportedly said to members of the foreign affairs committee of the Israeli Knesset on Monday. This statement was made in reference to an exchange of hostages and Palestinian detainees that took place in Israel in November 2023.
