FG informs Nigerians about anthrax outbreak in Zamfara.
Anthrax, which is caused by the bacterium Bacillus anthracis, is a zoonotic disease that can affect humans and a variety of warm-blooded animals, including cattle, sheep, goats, horses, and wildlife.
The Federal Ministry of Livestock Development, through its Director, Information and Public Relations Department, Mr. Ben. Bem Goong, made the announcement in a statement on Tuesday, January 21, alerting the public to a confirmed outbreak of the disease in a farm in Zamfara State.
The World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) has classified it as a notifiable disease because of the severe morbidity and mortality rates it can cause.
Anthrax can cause fever, coughing, vomiting, nausea, diarrhoea, headaches, swollen lymph nodes, itching, and bleeding from large openings in both humans and animals.
While coordinated measures like risk assessment, surveys, and ring vaccination of sensitive animals in high-risk areas can prevent anthrax, controlling its spread requires quick notice and action.
The government has urged all parties involved in the epidemic, particularly those states that border Zamfara, to act quickly to stop the disease’s spread.
“The public is urged to exercise caution, report any odd illnesses in humans or animals, and follow any preventive instructions provided by the appropriate authorities.
“To guarantee a prompt and efficient response, the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development is still dedicated to working with all stakeholders,” Goong stated.
