FG and Stakeholders Collaborate to Revitalize Nigeria’s Poultry Sector
The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (FMAFS) recently met with key members of the Multi-Stakeholder Platform for Poultry Value Chain in Lagos to revive Nigeria’s poultry industry, which, despite its significant capacity and potential, is currently facing a number of challenges. The AFOS Foundation arranged the gathering as part of a deliberate initiative to address these concerns through collaborative innovation across the chicken value chain.
Winnie Lai-Solarin, Director of FMAFS’ Department of Animal Husbandry Services, stressed the federal government’s commitment to increasing agricultural output, particularly in the poultry industry. “This meeting marks the beginning of a new era,” said Lai-Solarin, emphasizing the government’s commitment to addressing sector-specific difficulties through collaborative efforts.
Representatives from the Nigerian Institute of Animal Science (NIAS), industry associations, and big poultry farms all spoke out in favor of collaborative problem resolution. Key issues covered included value chain development, policy advocacy, inclusive finance, capacity building, and public-private partnerships.
Udo Herbert, Registrar of NIAS, emphasized the necessity of solving gaps and difficulties in the poultry value chain by bringing stakeholders together on a single platform to improve operations. He emphasized the Institute’s commitment to becoming a key player in the multi-stakeholder framework to address these concerns.
Despite Nigeria’s vast poultry population and industry, it continues to underperform in terms of national demand and development potential. Experts believe that tackling difficulties like feed shortages, excessive pricing, and infrastructure deficiencies could help the industry reach its full potential.
Juliet Adekoya, CEO and Country Representative of the AFOS Nig-INGO, urged all key stakeholders to join the platform in order to establish new partnerships that will drive growth and capitalize on the poultry sector’s enormous potential.
