FCT Primary School Teachers End Three-Month Strike, Set to Resume Classes Following N16 Billion Salary Payment.

Primary school teachers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have ended their three-month strike and will resume work starting Wednesday, July 9, 2025.

The strike, which began on March 24, was sustained by the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), FCT Wing, Abubakar Shafa, who insisted that teachers would not return until their unpaid salaries were cleared.

However, the strike was called off after the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, intervened and N16 billion was released to pay teachers’ outstanding entitlements.

A statement issued after an emergency meeting of the State Wing Executive Council (SWEC) explained that the strike suspension followed a stakeholder meeting convened by the minister on July 3, 2025. The meeting included the Chairmen of the House Committees on FCT and Area Councils, the FCT Head of Service, the Permanent Secretary of Treasury, NUT officials, and other key stakeholders.

The statement also noted that although the Area Councils are responsible for paying teachers’ salaries, their budgets were insufficient. To address this, the minister approved the release of six months’ worth of 10 percent of the FCT’s Internally Generated Revenue, totaling N16 billion, to pay the June 2025 salaries based on the new minimum wage and 60 percent of the nine-month salary arrears.
