Expert Claims Blood Donation Could Add Five Extra Years to Your Life.

People who frequently donate blood may live five more years than those who don’t, according to Lagos State University Teaching Hospital.

This was said on Wednesday at a voluntary blood donation campaign held at the News Agency of Nigeria’s Lagos headquarters by Professor Titi Adeyemo, Head of the Department of Haematology and Blood Transfusion at LUTH.
Adeyemo, who is also a Consultant Haematologist, clarified that giving blood maintains the bone marrow functioning, which keeps the recipient younger.

She was concerned about Nigeria’s continued reliance on family replacement donors, in which family members are coerced into giving blood.

As a result, she encouraged people to start giving blood now rather than waiting for an emergency.

“The department responds as often as possible to invitations for blood donation drives,” she said.

Supplementing the blood produced in the hospital is the aim of these initiatives. Donating blood three or four times a year is extremely safe for those between the ages of 18 and 65.

“Donating blood keeps the bone marrow functioning, and once it’s functioning, it keeps the person younger.”

Because their bone marrow is constantly replenished, regular blood donors may live five years longer than non-regular donors, according to some research, Adeyemo stated.
