Israeli Strikes Target Hamas Leaders in Lebanon and three Palestinian leaders in Beirut
While hundreds of Israeli tanks are positioned along the border, the militant Palestinian group Hamas has declared that one of its leaders in Lebanon has been killed by Israeli airstrikes. Hamas reported that Fateh Sherif Abu el-Amin, its leader in Lebanon, was killed early on Monday morning along with his wife, son, and daughter in an attack that targeted their home in a Palestinian refugee camp in the southern city of Tyre. This occurs just a few days after the long-time leader of Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah, was assassinated in Beirut. The group said that al-Amine was the victim of a "terrorist and criminal assassination," along with his wife, son, and daughter. Hours earlier, the secular left-wing Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) announced that three of its members had died in a strike that occurred early today in Beirut's Kola area. Thus far, the majority of Israel's attacks against Hezbollah have taken place in the southern suburbs of Beirut or in the southern part of Lebanon. However, the incident that occurred this morning in the Kola district was the first to occur inside Beirut's city borders; commentators worry that this is just another step forward that could lead to a bigger war that would involve Iran and the US. However, this past weekend saw an eleventh-hour call for moderation from the US and other members of the international community. Even as the US military strengthens its presence in the Middle East, President Joe Biden cautioned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that an all-out conflict in the region must be prevented. Since Israel intensified its attacks on Hezbollah, more than 1,030 people—156 women and 87 children—have died, according to Lebanon's Health Ministry, in less than two weeks. Massive damage was caused to a multistory residential building by the airstrike that struck the Kola area. Since the Gaza conflict broke out about a year ago, Israel has attacked officials from both Hamas and Hezbollah in Lebanon on multiple occasions.
