Following a 10-day trial for capital murder in the August 2020 death of his 8-month-old daughter Savayah Mason, Houston resident Luis Luna, 27, was found guilty, according to a news release issued by the Harris County Attorney's Office on Friday, October 4. According to the announcement, on August 24, 2020, Harris County sheriff's deputies were summoned to Luna's apartment on a report that the baby had stopped breathing. The baby was not responding as emergency care personnel tried to help her there. After that, the infant was taken to the hospital, where officials stated she was declared deceased. The baby died from suffocation, according to the district attorney's office, and there were ligature marks on her neck, indicating that she had been restrained. According to the release, authorities also mentioned that the infant had been sexually abused. According to the statement, Assistant District Attorney Edward A. Appelbaum, who prosecuted the case alongside Assistant District Attorney Sara Delgado, described the crime as "one of the most horrific acts of violence imaginable," adding that "it's the most detrimental type of evil in the world." Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg stated, "This baby couldn't walk or talk, and she should have been with someone who kept her safe, but instead he abused that trust."
