Biden Calls Nigerian President Tinubu About Binance Executive Gambaryan’s Release.
President Bola Tinubu and US President Joe Biden spoke over the phone today, October 9, discussing everything from law enforcement cooperation to Africa’s possible seat on the UN Security Council.
According to Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, Minister of Foreign Affairs, the call began at roughly 4 p.m.
Nigerian time and continued for about 30 minutes. State House correspondents were informed by Tuggar on the specifics of the two leaders’ talk, which he said focused on the recent release of Tigran Gambaryan, Head of Financial Crime Compliance at cryptocurrency trading company Binance.
Tuggar said, “The call was about the collaboration between the two countries with regards to law enforcement and law enforcement agencies as well as the release of one of the suspects of the cryptocurrency exchange company that you are all aware of”.
He further mentioned that President Tinubu thanked the United States for its cooperation on security issues, especially in Africa.
“Mr President also thanked the US for the partnership and collaboration in numerous areas with regards to security in Africa and West Africa as a whole.
President Biden assured President Tinubu that it was a partnership because the future of the world resides in Africa, and as such, the partnership is important” Tuggar said.
Biden reiterated US support for a permanent African seat on the UN Security Council during their discussion of the continent’s presence on the body.
Biden’s remarks were repeated by Tuggar, who stated that the US president “does not see why one of those seats should belong to Nigeria.”
