After winning the Golden Globes, Demi Moore is leading the Oscar race
Demi Moore made a stunning comeback at the Golden Globes, winning Best Actress for her role in the body horror film The Substance, a performance that has reinvigorated her career.
The 62-year-old actress delivered a heartfelt acceptance speech, revealing that she was at a “low point” before landing the role. “This award celebrates the gift of doing something I love and being reminded that I do belong,” she told the audience.
Other major film winners of the night included Emilia Pérez, The Brutalist, and Wicked, while the TV awards were dominated by Baby Reindeer and Shōgun. The Golden Globes, widely regarded as a precursor to the Oscars, kicked off awards season with its characteristic flair.
One of the evening’s biggest surprises was Brazilian actress Fernanda Torres, who won Best Actress in a Drama for her extraordinary performance in I’m Still Here. She beat out Hollywood heavyweights like Angelina Jolie and Nicole Kidman for the honor.
Unlike the Oscars, the Golden Globes distinguish between dramas and musicals/comedies, awarding separate prizes in most categories. Moore’s win came in the Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy category.
A Career Milestone
Moore, a Golden Globes mainstay in the 1990s and 2000s, had never won until now. In The Substance, she plays a woman who sacrifices her body in exchange for a younger, more beautiful version of herself.
Expressing disbelief at her victory in a competitive field—including nominees Mikey Madison (Anora), Cynthia Erivo (Wicked), and Karla Sofía Gascón (Emilia Pérez)—Moore said, “I’m in shock.”
From ‘Popcorn Actress’ to Acclaimed Star
Reflecting on her journey, Moore shared a poignant memory: “Thirty years ago, a producer told me I was a ‘popcorn actress.’ I took that to mean that awards weren’t for me, that I could make successful movies but wouldn’t be recognized.
“I believed it, and over time, it corroded me. A few years ago, I thought maybe I was done, that I’d achieved all I was supposed to.
“At my lowest point, this magical, bold, absolutely bonkers script called The Substance landed on my desk. It reminded me that the universe wasn’t done with me yet.”
Moore’s triumphant return serves as a testament to resilience and the power of reinvention in Hollywood.
