Tinubu orders the IG to secure LGA offices and denounces violence in the Rivers

Yesterday, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu declared that self-help has no place in a democracy and strongly denounced the ongoing violence in Rivers State over the results of the most recent council elections.

Following a violent outburst that resulted in the burning of three council secretariats, Tinubu sent the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, and other security agencies orders to safeguard the state’s twenty-three local government districts.

The governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, and other state officials were tasked by the president with exercising restraint and preserving the rule of law.

Fubara reacted by calling the arson of council buildings by alleged political goons careless. He asked the people of Rivers to conduct their political business responsibly.

When the governor appeared later on Channels Television, he also alluded to some of the peace initiatives he had taken, such as the necessity of repeatedly kneeling for Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike in the best interests of the state as a whole.

Following the president’s orders, the IGP gave the Rivers State Command Commissioner of Police immediate instructions to step up and bring the state’s laws back into compliance.

However, Chief Olabode George, a former PDP deputy national chairman, requested that the president summon the minister of the Federal Capital Territory to issue an order in order to avert chaos in Rivers State.
