Protest Erupts in PDP Secretariate Rivers State Over LG Polls

The people of Rivers state stormed the People’s Democratic Party secretariate over the Local Government election scheduled on October 5, 2024.

The arrival of protesters in huge numbers forced the security operatives to step in and control the crowd and traffic congestion in the area, reported Channels Television.

This protest was a result of the delay of the 2023 Voter’s Register by the Independent National Electoral Commission to the Rivers State Independence Electoral Commission.

Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court in Abuja, in a ruling delivered on September 30, 2024, barred INEC from releasing the voter’s register to RSIEC due to legal challenges, reported The PUNCH.

Governor Siminalayi Fubara, despite the court’s ruling, maintained the elections will go on as planned.

Fubara expressed that the Supreme Court’s earlier ruling, which mandates all states in the federation must have a democratically elected local government executive, supports his position.
