Atiku Abubakar, a former vice president, has expressed concern over what he saw as Nigeria’s drift into political dictatorship.

On Tuesday, the 64th anniversary of Nigeria’s Independence Day, he sent out a tweet on his verified X handle raising the alert.

“It is deeply regrettable that our current landscape reflects a troubling decline in electoral credibility, increasingly manipulated by those in power,” stated the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) candidate for the 2023 elections.

“The political environment has turned toxic; opposition parties are weak and the ruling party seems to be manipulating internal procedures to make them ineffective.

Nigeria is on the verge of becoming a one-party dictatorship, so it is the responsibility of all honourable politicians and statesmen to rise up and save our democracy from the creeping darkness of oppression.

“I would like to express my sincere congratulations to all Nigerians on this significant occasion as we commemorate Nigeria’s 64th year of independence.

This is a celebration of Nigerians’ unwavering spirit and will, as well as their unwavering belief in the promise of their country, rather than only a remembrance.

“As I consider this milestone, I am reminded of the many turbulent stages that our country has gone through. However, our resolve as a robust entity has been strengthened by the perseverance of our patriotic population, who are supported by the solidarity of our foreign allies. As we commemorate 64 years of nationalhood today, I am proud of Nigeria’s enduring democracy.

“This anniversary represents the longest period of democratic governance in our history, a testament to our collective commitment.

But I must stress that, even while democracy has solidified the foundation of the rule of law in our institutions, we still haven’t made enough progress in promoting political inclusivity and guaranteeing really free and fair elections.

“I urge the political class to band together in the admirable task of defending our democracy against the threat of dictatorship.

“Our founding ancestors got together for a common goal and used nonviolent political activism to defend our independence. The accomplishment of their joint efforts and those of succeeding generations is what we commemorate today. Finally, I would want to make a strong plea to political leaders from all political parties: let’s build a strong coalition that will give Nigerians a viable opposition that can lead our dear country to a bright future.
