Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at the University of Calabar (UNICAL) have joined their counterparts nationwide in signaling readiness for an indefinite national strike set to commence from Wednesday, August 28, 2025, if the Federal Government fails to meet their long-standing demands.

During a protest rally held on the UNICAL campus on Tuesday, August 27, ASUU members voiced their frustration over what they described as the government’s continued neglect of the union’s key demands chief among them being the full implementation of the renegotiated ASUU-FGN 2009 Agreement, payment of withheld salaries, earned academic allowances, and revitalization funds for public universities.

Speaking to journalists, the Chairperson of ASUU-UNICAL, Dr. John Edor, said:

“We have run out of patience. The Federal Government has made too many promises and fulfilled none. Our members have spoken—if there’s no concrete action by the government by tomorrow, we will not hesitate to down tools indefinitely.”

ASUU members carried placards with inscriptions such as “Restore Our Withheld Salaries,” “Revive Public Universities Now,” and “FG Must Honour the ASUU-FGN Agreement.” They were also joined by student leaders and representatives from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), showing solidarity with the union’s demands.

Similar protests were held across university campuses in Lagos, Ibadan, Abuja, Port Harcourt, and Uyo. In many of these locations, ASUU branches conducted votes an overwhelming majority favoring the option of an indefinite strike should the Federal Government remain unresponsive.

The growing agitation comes on the heels of ASUU’s rejection of the recently introduced student loan scheme, which the union described as a “ploy to commercialize education and abandon state responsibility.”

As the nation awaits a response from the government, fears are mounting among students and parents that another prolonged academic disruption may be imminent.

The Federal Ministry of Education has yet to issue an official response as of press time.
