Sokoto Government Launches Plan to Digitalize Basic and Secondary Education.

The Sokoto State Government is aiming to fully digitalize its basic and secondary education system within the next two years.

This was revealed by the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Prof. Ahmed Ala, during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja on Monday.

Ala explained that digitalizing education would enhance the quality of teaching and learning across the state.

He added that it would also simplify the government’s ability to monitor staff, especially teachers, and oversee the implementation of education policies. “Our goal is to completely digitalize the information system for basic and secondary education in Sokoto State,” he said. “This system will help us evaluate teachers’ and principals’ performance based on key indicators such as teaching effectiveness and attendance.”

Ala noted that the digital platform already allows the government to rank schools, with those scoring 14 points or higher categorized as very good, while those scoring six points or less are considered poor.

The initiative, known as the Education Management Information System (EMIS), provides a comprehensive platform for accessing data on infrastructure, ICT resources, libraries, and other relevant information quickly.

“This digitalization will also supply development partners with instant insights into our strengths and weaknesses, aiding in planning, execution, and policy enforcement,” the commissioner said.

He also mentioned that while EMIS focuses on school-related data, a Teachers Management Information System will be used to track academic staff.

Furthermore, Ala emphasized the government’s commitment to improving teacher quality, acknowledging that many currently lack the necessary skills, knowledge, and experience to effectively teach at the secondary level.

As a result, the government is intensively training teachers to build a more literate society.
