A heavy downpour on Wednesday morning led to the collapse of eight buildings and forced several residents from their homes in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State.

The rain began around 6:15 a.m. and lasted for about three hours, flooding areas such as Bulumkutu, Abuja, Moduganari, Ngomari, and other communities near rivers.

Ahmodu Ibrahim, a resident of Bulumkutu, said water began entering his house around 8 a.m., prompting him to evacuate with his family. “I noticed the water rising about an hour after the rain started. I quickly took my wife and children to safety,” he explained.

Another resident mentioned that the flood destroyed many of her goods, particularly those kept on the floor.

The Borno State Police Command responded swiftly, deploying officers to carry out assessments and support rescue efforts in affected neighborhoods like Gomari, Bulumkutu, Jidari, and ITE.

According to the police, although eight buildings collapsed, no lives were lost. Officers have been positioned at key locations to protect vacant homes and prevent theft or other criminal activities.

Commissioner of Police, Naziru Abdulmaji, praised the prompt efforts of the officers involved and urged the public to remain calm and cooperative. He also advised parents to keep a close watch on their children and stop them from playing in floodwaters due to the dangers involved.
