UNIPORT: Dismisses Viral Snake Rumor as False and Misleading.
The University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) has disproved social media claims that a large snake, allegedly seen as a deity, was found and killed in one of its hostels or classrooms.
The rumor, which went viral on Tuesday alongside a circulating voice note, caused alarm among students, parents, and the public.
In a statement released on Wednesday in Port Harcourt, the university’s spokesperson, Dr. Sammy Kpenu, categorically denied the incident, describing it as fabricated and misleading.
He assured that no such event occurred on campus and emphasized that UNIPORT remains a secure and conducive environment for learning.
Kpenu condemned the individuals behind the false report, accusing them of attempting to gain attention and social media followers at the university’s expense.
“The University of Port Harcourt has taken note of baseless rumors and deceptive posts alleging that a massive snake labeled a deity was discovered and killed in a classroom,” the statement said. “This claim, accompanied by a fear-inducing voice note, is completely untrue and fabricated by those intent on causing unnecessary panic.”
The university stressed that there was no snake sighting, no killing of a snake, and no such incident took place on campus.
Management urged the public, staff, students, and stakeholders to ignore the rumor and avoid sharing such false information. It also revealed that steps are being taken to identify and report those responsible for spreading the misinformation to relevant authorities.
The institution encouraged everyone to rely solely on official university channels for verified updates.
