Tinubu Renames University of Maiduguri as Muhammadu Buhari University in Honour of Late Former President.

President Bola Tinubu has announced the renaming of the University of Maiduguri in Borno State to Muhammadu Buhari University, in honour of the late former president. This decision was revealed at the conclusion of a special Federal Executive Council session held at the Aso Rock Villa on Thursday, organized to pay tribute to Buhari, who passed away on Sunday, July 13, at age 82.

In his tribute, President Tinubu praised Buhari as a man of integrity, discipline, and patriotism, noting that while he wasn’t perfect as no leader is his dedication to national service distinguished him. Tinubu described Buhari as an honourable, decent man whose moral standards and incorruptibility left a lasting impact.

Reflecting on Buhari’s legacy, Tinubu highlighted his modesty, resilience, and resistance to the lure of power. He spoke of Buhari’s quiet strength, describing him as a leader who prioritized doing what was right over seeking popularity or praise.

Tinubu also recalled their political partnership, which led to the historic 2015 elections Nigeria’s first peaceful transfer of power from one ruling party to another.

Tinubu noted that after leaving office, Buhari returned to his hometown of Daura and lived simply, avoiding interference in national affairs. He commended the late president’s humility and deep sense of duty, even in death, describing him as a man who submitted quietly to God’s will.

He thanked the Inter-Ministerial Committee and Katsina State Governor Dikko Radda for organizing a dignified state funeral within 48 hours and expressed deep honour in leading the burial in Daura.

Tinubu concluded his tribute with a heartfelt prayer, asking Allah to forgive Buhari’s shortcomings and grant him paradise. He referred to him affectionately as “Mai Gaskiya” (The Honest One), “the People’s General,” and “the Farmer President,” expressing hope that Buhari’s life will continue to inspire future generations of Nigerians to lead with courage and selflessness.
