Lagos Police Declare Total Vehicular Restriction for July 12 LG Elections, Vow to Arrest Troublemakers.

The Lagos State Police Command has announced a total restriction of vehicular movement across the state from 3:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 12, 2025, to ensure public safety and smooth conduct of the Local Government elections.

In a statement signed by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the police emphasized that the movement restriction applies to all roads and waterways throughout the state’s 20 Local Government Areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs). The directive comes as part of a broad and strategic security arrangement aimed at delivering a peaceful and credible election.

“Elaborate and comprehensive security measures have been put in place to ensure a secure, peaceful, and orderly conduct of the Local Government elections scheduled for Saturday, July 12, 2025,” the statement read.

Exemptions for Essential Services

The Police noted that only essential services would be exempted from the restriction. These include:
Medical emergency vehicles,Ambulances and fire trucks,Security patrol vehicles under the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES),Officials of the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC),Accredited election observers,Recognized members of the media.

Ban on Armed Escorts and Sirens

To further ensure a level playing field, the Command prohibited the presence of armed escorts and security aides at polling units and collation centers. The use of sirens near electoral zones is also banned.

“No police escorts or armed security personnel are permitted to accompany their principals to polling units or collation centers,” the statement emphasized.

Additionally, state-owned security outfits and quasi-security agencies have been barred from participating in election-related security operations, in accordance with the provisions of the Electoral Act.

Stern Warning to Potential Troublemakers

The Police issued a firm warning to miscreants, hoodlums, and their sponsors, stating that any attempt to disrupt the election process will be met with swift and decisive action.

“Suspected miscreants, hoodlums, and their sponsors will be promptly arrested, investigated, and prosecuted,” Hundeyin said.

The statement also called on parents and guardians to caution their children and wards against engaging in any form of electoral violence, intimidation, or harassment during and after the polls.

Call for Public Cooperation

Members of the public are urged to plan their movements accordingly and to cooperate fully with law enforcement agencies. The Command reaffirmed its commitment to upholding human rights and dignity, assuring residents that security personnel will treat all citizens with respect during the enforcement of the restrictions.
