Panic broke out in Ekwulobia and Oko communities in Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State on Wednesday morning following a brutal attack by heavily armed gunmen. At least four people were k!lled, and multiple vehicles were set on fire during the assault that started around 8 a.m.

Eyewitnesses reported that the att@ckers took strategic positions on a newly constructed bridge connecting the two towns, from where they launched an indiscriminate att@ck on a joint security patrol team comprising police, soldiers, and members of the local vigilante group, Agunaechemba security. The gunmen also set abl@ze a Toyota Sienna vehicle belonging to an indigene of nearby Isuofia, leaving it burning in the middle of the road after forcing the driver to flee.

The att@ck caused widespread chaos as residents and commuters fled for safety. One eyewitness said, “The gunmen came in large numbers and immediately opened fire from the bridge, causing pan!c in the community.”

In response, the Anambra State Police Command confirmed the incident and announced that reinforcement teams from the command headquarters have been deployed to intensify patrols in major areas including Onitsha, Nnewi, Ihiala, Aguata, and Awka.
