Luis Enrique Calls PSG vs. Real Madrid Club World Cup Semi-Final a ‘Special’ Encounter.
Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique described the upcoming Club World Cup semi-final against Real Madrid as a “special” match but downplayed any questions about his relationship with Kylian Mbappe ahead of facing the star striker again.
Speaking at a press conference near New York’s MetLife Stadium, where the game will be held, the Spanish coach said, “Playing Real Madrid is always special. We’re happy to be in this game because it shows we’ve done well so far.”
PSG arrived in the U.S. after winning their first UEFA Champions League title, a season following Mbappe’s transfer to Real Madrid.
Luis Enrique coached Mbappe during his final, turbulent season at PSG, when the forward was initially excluded for refusing to renew his contract and then used sparingly once it was clear he would leave.
Luis Enrique said, “That is all in the past now.” He emphasized the significance of the semi-final, saying, “This game is important because it’s a Club World Cup semi-final. It’s very interesting, and we must stay focused.” He added that reaching another final is a big motivation, despite missing defenders Willian Pacho and Lucas Hernandez, who were both sent off in the quarter-final win over Bayern Munich.
While PSG aims to add to their trophy haul, the Club World Cup also marks the beginning of a new chapter for Real Madrid under their new coach, Xabi Alonso.
Luis Enrique said, “It’s hard to analyze Real Madrid because Xabi Alonso is just starting. I’ve always enjoyed playing against Real Madrid — they’re the most successful club in the world, and Xabi has what it takes to succeed.”
Real Madrid’s coach Alonso did not speak to the media on Tuesday due to a delayed flight caused by bad weather.
The winner of the semi-final will face Chelsea in the final on Sunday, after the English team beat Fluminense 2-0 in the other semi-final match on Tuesday.
