Former Presidential Aide Doyin Okupe Passes Away at 72

Dr. Doyin Okupe, a former media aide to ex-presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, has passed away at the age of 72.

Okupe died on Friday, March 7, at a hospital in Victoria Island, Lagos, after battling a remission of cancer. Family sources confirmed that he had been critically ill for weeks before his passing.

Born on March 22, 1952, in Iperu, Ogun State, Okupe was the son of Chief Matthew Adekoya Okupe, a banker at Agbonmagbe Bank. He attended St. Jude’s School, Ebute Metta, Igbobi College, Yaba, and the University of Ibadan, Oyo State.

During Nigeria’s Fourth Republic, Okupe served as Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to President Olusegun Obasanjo. In 2002, he contested for the PDP governorship ticket in Ogun State but lost to Gbenga Daniel. He later became Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs to President Goodluck Jonathan in 2012 and also served as the spokesperson for Peter Obi’s presidential campaign.

Okupe is survived by his wife and children.
