Video: Lionel Messi Fined for Grabbing Opposition Coach’s Neck
Lionel Messi, the superstar forward for Inter Miami, has been fined by Major League Soccer (MLS) following an incident after his team’s 2-2 draw against New York City FC on February 24, 2025.
The incident occurred when Messi was seen approaching NYCFC’s assistant coach, Mehdi Ballouchy, and grabbing the back of his neck.
This behavior violated MLS’s policy against players using hands to the face, head, or neck of an opponent, prompting the league to issue a fine.
Although the exact amount has not been disclosed, Messi accepted the fine and expressed regret over the incident.
In a separate altercation during the match, Messi’s teammate, Luis Suárez, also faced a fine for pinching the neck of NYCFC defender Birk Risa at halftime.
Both players have accepted their penalties and are expected to continue participating in future matches for Inter Miami.
