FG Calls for Investigation into Nigerian Footballer Abubakar Lawal’s Death in Uganda.

A comprehensive autopsy and inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the unexplained death of Nigerian football player Abubakar Lawal in Uganda have been sought by the Federal Government.

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) Chairman/CEO, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, called the incident “pathetic and suspicious” in a press release signed by Abdur-Rahman Balogun, Director of Media, Public Relations, and Protocols Unit, on Tuesday.

He emphasised the need for a comprehensive investigation into the tragic event.

“This is pathetic and appears suspicious,” Dabiri-Erewa said in the statement.

We insist on a comprehensive inquiry. Not even a cover-up. This is really depressing! “A comprehensive and open investigation would be guaranteed and demanded by the Nigerian government.

“May God grant the family the strength to cope with this loss and may his soul rest in peace,” she said.

This follows the announcement by Uganda’s Kajjansi Police Division that they were looking into the untimely death of Lawal, a professional football player at Vipers Sports Club, who was reported to have fallen from the third story of Voicemall Shopping Arcade early on February 24, 2025.

According to preliminary information, Lawal drove his car, registered UBQ 695G, to the mall to meet his friend Omary Naima, a Tanzanian national who has been living in room 416 since February 20, 2025.

Naima claims that after leaving Lawal, a final-year student at Cavendish University, in the room making tea, she went to a gaming facility inside the shopping centre.

Lawal apparently fell from the balcony shortly after, at around 8:00 am.

After being taken to Entebbe Referral Hospital, he was declared deceased.

Authorities are acquiring CCTV footage and questioning him extensively as part of the ongoing inquiry to determine what caused his demise.
