Edo government orders investigation into alleged journalist assault by DSS

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has called for an investigation into Monday’s alleged assault on journalists by an official of the Department of State Services (DSS) during coverage of the Edo Governorship Election Tribunal at the High Court in Benin City.

This was disclosed in a press statement issued by the chairman and secretary of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Edo State Council, Festus Alenkhe and Andy Egbon.

The council commended Governor Okpebholo for his decisive action in ensuring the safety and security of journalists, stating that his swift intervention underscores his dedication to protecting the fundamental rights of media practitioners.

“We are deeply grateful to Governor Okpebholo for his prompt response, which sends a strong message that attacks on journalists will not be tolerated in Edo State,” the statement read.

The NUJ further praised the governor’s proactive measures in addressing the alleged attack during the tribunal proceedings and confirmed that he has directed relevant security agencies to investigate the claims thoroughly.

“We urge all stakeholders to join hands with Governor Okpebholo in promoting a culture of respect for the media and the fundamental rights of journalists,” the council added.

The union also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the governor’s efforts in fostering a safe and enabling environment for media practitioners in the state, while applauding his alignment with democratic principles and the rule of law.

The NUJ concluded by reiterating its dedication to protecting journalists’ rights and working toward a conducive atmosphere for responsible journalism in Edo State.
