“BRICS Welcomes Nigeria as Partner Country, Featuring Its Name on Proposed Reserve Currency”
At the current BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia, which is taking place from October 22 to 24, 2024, Nigeria and 12 other countries have formally joined BRICS as partners, further solidifying their economic ties with the bloc.
Nigeria’s inclusion follows a notable increase in foreign capital inflows from BRICS countries, which increased by 189% in the first half of 2024 to $1.27 billion, from $438.72 million in the same period in 2023.
The bloc posted on X (former Twitter) on Wednesday, saying, “BRICS officially adds 13 new nations to the alliance as partner countries (not full members).”
This comes after Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates were granted full membership in January 2024.
The other 12 countries joining as partner nations include Algeria, Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam.
Nigeria was also included in the list of partner countries, not full members. The 2024 BRICS conference in Russia marked the first time these four nations attended as full members. Social media users responded quickly to the news.
